OPENING REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS, ENGR. OTIS ANYAEJI, FNSE, FAEng, KSG AT THE INAUGURATION OF ENGR. JOSEPH SUNDAY ADEBAYO, FNIEEE, MNSE AS THE 19TH CHAIRMAN OF NSE ILORIN BRANCH, ON 29TH APRIL 2017, AT ILORIN BRANCH ENGINEERING CENTRE

Protocol Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, It is delightful for me, here represented by Engr. Abass Mohammed Ishola, FNSE, to be part of this auspicious, historic and epoch-making occasion, marking the inauguration of our beloved Engr. Joseph Sunday Adebayo as the 19th Chairman of NSE Ilorin Branch. Let me convey my deepest regrets on my inability to physically attend the inauguration ceremony, due to earlier arranged engagements.
However, be assured that of my prayers, high regards and best wishes for a most successful event.

I am particularly enthused by the choice of theme “PROFESSIONALISM, ACCOUNTABILITY & TRANSPARENCY: PANACEA FOR NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT, which without any spec of doubt, is in tandem with our overall strategic vision of re-engineering professional values, ethics and conduct of our members.

Like I stressed in my Investiture Speech in January 16, 2016, excellent engineering practice minus ethics comes to nothing. For us as a nation and Society to raise a generation of ethical professional, it is imperative that Engineering Ethics and Business Ethics are incorporated in the curricula for engineering personnel in school. These shall become the foundation programme in the journey towards achieving professional status.

NSE AT A GLANCE
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) is the umbrella body for all engineering professionals in the country. It was founded in 1958 in London for the purpose of providing a central organization for advancing the interests of the engineering profession in Nigeria, as well as promoting and maintaining a high standard of engineering study and practice.

The Society has witnessed tremendous growth in recent times. It now has 24 professional Institutions representing various specialized disciplines of engineering, 64 branches across the country and membership strength of over 50,000. This spread has given the Society the platform to enhance the professionalism and capacity of our members.

Distinguished colleagues, our Branches and Professional Institutions are the platform through which we achieve our noble goals, and it is to our credit that we have created a culture of seamless transition of leadership.
We must prioritize membership drive.

I expect the new Chairman with his EXCO to go all out and woo back into the fold some of our members who are no longer actively involved in the Branch’s activities.

The new leadership should also encourage members to meet their financial obligation by paying their dues promptly, for the Society to be buoyant to effectively execute its activities.

I expect the new Chairman to promote team work amongst the EXCO and Members and prioritize capacity building initiatives. Likewise, I task the Members to support the Chairman and EXCO in order to take the Branch to enviable heights.

Let me also highlight the need for us to make proper arrangements for the attendance of our major activity for the year, being our National Conference themed: Diversification of the Nigerian Economy: Engineering Perspectives, slated for Monday, 20th to Friday, 24th November 2017, Abuja.I charge you all to effectively utilize our online payment system to avoid the stress attendant upon on-site registration at the Conference venue as in the times past.
