Creativity in a chosen field allows dynamism in areas of operation and is key to innovation and  economic development. Given the current situation of the Nigerian Economy, there is increasing need for innovation: Chemical Engineers must embrace creative thinking in order to keep their career and  organizations competitive and sustainable. Understanding the role of creative thinking within the context of chemical Engineering brings maximum output. With the rate at which technology and business are racing to disruption as a result of new innovations, techniques and increasing competitiveness in the workplace and marketplace, there is no room for engineers who desire to be relevant in the industry and in contributing to national economy to sit back.

It is on this Premise that NICHEM Ventures Limited, a subsidiary of Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers is organising a high profile two days workshop on creativity for chemical engineers as part of its efforts at shoring up engineers capacities and creative thinking to enhance optimum productivity and innovation in their work.

Course outline

  •  Introduction to the creative process for engineers
  •  The importance of becoming more creative as engineers
  •  Recognizing the value of your day to day task
  •  Breaking down barriers to generating ideas; blocks and blockbusting techniques
  •  Defining the real problem- setting the stage
  • o Case study on analysis of organization’s products and services
  •  Generating solutions; introducing a range of creative process to generate solutions to the real problems.
  • o Case study on brainstorming solutions
  •  Selecting a solution – the Kepner-Tregoe (KT) approach
  • o Case study on solution selection
  •  Implementing a solution; the process of approval, planning, carry-through and follow-up
  • o Case study on solution implementation-creating timelines
  •  Evaluating a solution for effectiveness, safety and ethical considerations
  • o Case study on evaluating your progress

By the end of the course delegates would:
• Understand the role of creative thinking within the context of chemical Engineering
• Appreciate the importance of being creative in problem solving
• Be able to apply criteria to help define the real problem
• Be able to recognize mental blocks and initiate their removal by ‘blockbusting’ techniques
• Appreciate a range of creative processes for identifying solutions to the real problem
• Be introduced to the Kepner-Tregoe (KT) approach for selecting an appropriate solution
• Understand the process of implementing a solution effectively
• Be able to evaluate a solution against the criteria of effectiveness, safety and ethics.
