Several injured as train derails in Lagos

Several people have been reported injured as a train coming from Ijoko, Ogun State, and heading to Ebute Metta, Lagos, derailed at Mangoro/ Agege area.

The PUNCH learnt that three couches were affected by the accident, which occurred around 7am.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, in a statement on Thursday, said an investigation showed that the train derailed as a result of faulty tracks.

The agency explained that the tracks had been reported by men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority in the area and was noted for pending engineering works later in the day.

It said although no life was lost, injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for first aid.

“Efforts are currently being made to evacuate the derailed coaches as the Nigeria Railway Corporation crane has been dispatched to the scene from Lagos Island.

“The GM LASEMA, LRT, LRU PARAMEDICS, LRU FIRE, LASAMBUS, FRSC, RRS, LASTMA and Nigeria Police are on ground to ensure swift recovery. Recovery operation ongoing by the officials of the Nigeria Railway Corporation,” the statement added.

  1. We seem not ready to learn except lives are sacrificed on the altar of political correctness and personal aggrandizement.
Rotimi Amechi and his likes should hands-off any technology driven/related project for COREN determination. All these undue interferences by Amechi and other incompetent hands are responsible for the prevalence of train derailments and stagnation in technology development around Nigeria.
Amechi does not fit into the holistic definition of rail and other technology related activities around the country. Technology is not an administrative preoccupation. This is why he would consciously accept antiquated engines and other technologies which results in the seeming lack of progress in the transport sector.
Nobody would want to do anything or act because no VIP has been consumed as a result.
